Blackout

“As John Chambers famously said, ‘There are only two types of organizations: Those that have been hacked and those that don’t know it yet!’” BlackOut was the first offline Cybersecurity event hosted by MIT Cybersecurity and Blockchain Club with over 200 participants. The aim of the event was to aware students what exactly Cybersecurity is, and litting a flame of curiosity in their hearts.

Our distinguished dean, Prof. Rajneesh Kaur Sachdev, our acclaimed faculty coordinators, Profs. Nilesh Marathe and Kiran Bidua, as well as Prof. Rahul Sonkamble, all attended the event.

After a firm Introduction, we made students experience the extends of Cyber Threat by performing some Ethical Hacks on live platform. Rather than explaining theoretically it is better to show how threats in real world are and how they can be tackled.

The topics covered were:

"Cam Hacking"

In this hack we tried to access a victims cam without his/her consent giving the audience the idea about how they can be played out by giving away the attacker their cam access resulting in privacy evading and awareness about the same. Sahil, Elaborated the whole procedure which was at the same time performed by Ruchi Ranka at that time, overall we had a really great experience making people aware about some loopholes that are currently exciting and how they can affect us and how we can defend it .

"Wi-Fi hacking"

For this hack we demonstrated how to take over Wi-Fi and perform a MITM attack to give audience the idea about how dangerous it can be just to be connected to a regular Wi-Fi. The audience gave us overwhelmingly positive remarks. For them it was really thrilling to see some live hack that gave a clear knowledge of how basic functions can be turned into exploits that can be really Dangerous. They also considered the information to be very helpful and stated that this event gave them the view to understand what cybersecurity truly is. Many indicated an interest in joining the club and pledged to attend all future events.
